You Are More Than Pretty
"Pretty is not the rent you pay to exist in the world as a woman ."
I’ve been broken up with TWICE in my life for a short haircut. Seriously.
In middle school and high school, during our prime self discovery time. When we are most vulnerable to the outside world’s influence on our values and self value.
I think back to those boys sometimes and think how little value I must have had to them to break up over eight inches of hair.
And I think back to myself, and how I deserved to be liked and loved for more than eight inches of hair.
And I think back to what message that gave a spindly, confused teenager just trying to find a place in the world.
And I think about all the other ways the world tells us that our value is measured by our beauty, not our soul.
And it pisses. Me. Off.
Women are more than their hair, than their thighs, and their bodies.
I photograph women not because their value is in the photo, but because they are inherently valuable, because the world has said otherwise.
You are beautiful and powerful.
