Here’s a tale of two goddess — one mythological, one flesh and blood.
According to Greek Mythology, the goddess Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Her beauty was revered, but as a young maiden she was kidnapped by Hades, married him and became Queen of the Underworld. After being tricked into eating pomegranate fruit — the forbidden food of The Underworld — she took her rightful place on the throne.
Her powerful story explains how the ancient Greeks described the change of the seasons — the eternal cycle of the Nature's death and rebirth — as Persephone spent half her time in The Underworld and half her time on Olympus.
Flesh and blood goddess Jamie Fletcher can relate to Persephone’s transformation through darkness. With help from professional hair and makeup artist Renee Jacobson, she transformed during a Persephone-themed photoshoot in celebration of her 30th birthday.
“After a long year of transition, transformation, and some pretty dark struggles, I was feeling like my 30th birthday needed to be celebrated with something more meaningful than cake,” Jamie says. “Over the course of 365 days, I had gone from being a lost, naive, houseless yoga teacher in Costa Rica trapped in a dark and damaging relationship, to a driven, strong and well-supported boss babe building incredible communities in my own power.”
Jamie wanted photographs to honor this change, to embrace both the light and dark attributes that are inextricably part of her. She looks ethereal in her mother’s vintage ivory lace dress. Adorned with a bouquet of roses and at times a crown, she represents the new growth of spring, the positives changes in her life.
“I was drawn to the idea of Persephone, the Greek goddess of spring and Queen of the Underworld,” she says. “Because if you can be bright and powerful, dark and blooming, growing and governing all at once... well, I figure, there's really no stopping you.”
When draped in moody black lace and red velvet Jamie embraces her power, her ability to choose her own path along the edge of light and dark. Each photo is a transformation and revelation of duality.
“This is about empowerment and being fully present with myself, as I am, all things considered and adored,” she says. “For the first time in my life, I've started focusing on the things that help me feel celebrated. I’m not waiting for anyone else to bring them to me on a platter. If I want a party, then it's my honor to throw it. If I want to feel beautiful, then I'm going to love myself like crazy until it shows. If I want to see myself as, and be seen as a goddess, then dammit, I'm going to get the photographic evidence to prove it!”
Everyday we are in awe of women who have overcome struggles. Women who have risen above and reclaimed their power with strength they never knew they had. We are so grateful to Jamie for being vulnerable and sharing her journey. Are you ready to honor your strength through photos? Contact us today. Need a little inspiration?
