How to Prep Your Skin for a Photoshoot

April 12, 2019

Are you as obsessed with makeup tutorials as we are? Does your search history look a little something like this: “How to get dewy youthful skin?”

Well you’re in luck! It’s easier than you think to achieve model-status skin during your next photoshoot with the following tips and tricks from our friend Emily Mercer. Emily is a fantastic Portland esthetician and professional hair and makeup artist. She also specializes in permanent cosmetic tattoos for those on-fleek, shoot-ready brows. See her work here: www.emilymercerbeauty.com/

In the blog below, Emily shares her expertise and breaks down a simple process to help you create a beautiful skin foundation for your professional makeup.

You’ve hired a photographer and compiled the perfect outfits for your big photoshoot. Congrats! Now it’s time to make sure you get the most out of the experience. Afterall, photos are an investment that you’ll cherish through the decades — so you should LOVE them!

So how do you put your best face forward? I have two words for you. Skin. Prep. For starters, become very intentional about your water intake 2-3 weeks prior to photoshoot day. Carry a water bottle everywhere you go and set reminders to sip on it throughout the day.

During this timeframe it’s also important to exfoliate your skin 2-3 times a week, followed by a hydrating face mask once a week. These steps ensure that you’re constantly renewing and hydrating the skin from the inside out. Beauty may only be skin deep, but proper skin care will last a lifetime!

Next, 3 days before the photoshoot stop all exfoliating. Any type of exfoliating that you were so wisely committed to in the first few weeks must stop now. Exfoliating treatments can interfere with makeup application and hinder the look of your photos. So set down the scrub and focus on getting solid hours of sleep with your water bottle by your side!

Finally the day has arrived for you to get in front of the camera. This should be a truly magical day and unforgettable experience. To make it go smoothly, set your makeup artist up for success! Start the day off by cleansing your skin as normal but don’t apply moisturizer or sunscreen. Remember to take special care to remove any leftover mascara or waterproof makeup.

Now the fun part! Bring inspirational photos to help you explain your desired look to the makeup artist. Their goal is to help you look fierce, flawless and fabulous, and your search history — those tutorials and images you’ve saved and pinned — will help make this beauty transformation possible. Last but not least, let your makeup artist know if you have any allergies or skin sensitivities to specific products before they even pull out their brushes.

That’s it, you are now a pro! These easy steps will completely set you up for success on photoshoot day. Your skin will feel hydrated and glowy, making it the best canvas for your artist to work on!
